Choosing a career in medicine

A career is described as a journey, during which one finds their purpose. For this reason, finding the right career is tantamount to finding your purpose in life. For me, this purpose lies in helping people feel better, and live longer, fulfilled lives, and the best way I can achieve this is by pursuing a career in medicine.

A career in medicine is one of the most fulfilling and detailed kind of jobs, and it needs all the effort anyone can put into it, and I have included a breakdown of what it takes to be a medical doctor.

First, a good high school diploma is needed to get into college, and depending on the specific field, medical studies last for 4 years in college, to obtain a bachelor degree. Afterwards comes the residency in training hospitals, which could be between 3 to 7 years, depending again on the specifications chosen, after which another 1 or 2 years is spent in housemanship or a fellowship, to focus on the exact field or branch of medicine chosen.

After completing medical studies, the new doctors and physicians need to be given a licence by the state where they choose to work in. To get this licence, every relevant certificate and documentation obtained during the course of study needs to be in order.

Besides the years of study, the pay, incentives, bonuses and recognition that medical practitioners receive is more than enough to go by, and more than enough encouragement to choose to walk that career path.

Taking on a medical profession is as challenging as it is a highly rewarding and noble path. In this profession, I will witness the creation, sustenance, as well as every other stage of life, first hand, and play a role in it.

Life is short, so to play my part in making it worthwhile and as fulfilling as possible, I have chosen to go into medicine. The points above do not scratch the surface of my list of reasons, but they are enough for me to know that that is what I want.

General Practitioner

Imagine a career where one gets up in the morning knowing that they can save lives, heal the injured, and treat the ill. Imagine being respected in the community, aiding in the discovery of medical breakthroughs, and being a trusted part of families from birth through the geriatric years. Imaging making a substantial income in addition to the benefit of the feeling of giving.

Yes, all of this can be found by pursuing a career as a family physician. Through examining numerous career choices, even within the field of medicine, the general practitioner has emerged as the most overall appropriate choice of careers for an individual who seeks long term relationships with their patients and enjoys the family atmosphere and regular business hours that will allow for a family life outside of the office. In order to fully establish this as an appropriate career choice and to develop an educational plan to achieve this position, it is important to explore the necessary educational path, discover the job description involved in working as a general family practitioner, and evaluate the job outlook for this career.

The first step to achieving any career goal is to determine what educational path needs to be taken in order to obtain licensure in that field. In the state of Arizona, the University of Arizona offers the College of Medicine for the purpose of achieving a PhD in medicine. However, although the requirement of med school is universal for any specialization as a physician, the undergraduate degree is far less particular. In fact, “although, no specific major is required, all students must complete undergraduate work in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This leaves room for variations in the undergraduate program as the more tedious requirements are in graduate school. Overall, “almost all physicians complete at least 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and, depending on their specialty, 3 to 8 years in internship and residency programs” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Once the doctor graduates college, it also necessary that they obtain specific licensures. For the purpose of becoming a general practitioner, “M.D.s take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Beyond the legal educational credits and licensures required to become a physician, it is also recommended that doctors seek training that will “reflect fundamental changes in the nature and delivery of care, from greater emphasis on patient needs and a new reliance on information technology to a serious focus on prevention” (Howard 55). This means that doctors should be educated in areas of technology, dietary needs, social responsibility, and an increased knowledge of the aging process in a modernized world. The combination of education, licensures, and modernized knowledge will prepare an individual for success as a general practitioner.

Physicians are expected to cover a wide range of specialties but the general practitioner is expected to be aware of several of these areas of specialization. For example, it is noted that “family and general physicians assess and treat a range of conditions that occur in everyday life. These conditions include anything from sinus and respiratory infections to broken bones. Family and general physicians typically have regular, long-term patients” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This means that they have an opportunity to work closely with the same individuals throughout their practice and are often better equipped in terms of medical history, to diagnose new illnesses should they occur. However, it is notable that, just because the general practitioner operates on “normal business hours,” the days are quite hectic. According to an interview with Dr. Taylor, the business day is always full. Taylor describes her day as “I arrive at 8am to go through lab results and have four sessions in the surgery. We have booked surgeries of 14 patients — there aren’t any extras because we have the emergency surgery every day. I then do phone calls and after that visits” (Andalo 27). This shows that the workload is expansive but also very rewarding. This is confirmed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the website states that “Most physicians and surgeons work full time. Many physicians and surgeons work long, irregular, and overnight hours. Physicians and surgeons may travel between their offices and hospitals to care for their patients.” However, the salary for a physician compensates for the heavy workload and the long hours as the median salary for a general family practitioner is 207,117 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is an ample salary to support a comfortable lifestyle while having the added benefit of job satisfaction.

Fortunately, the job outlook for the general practitioner further confirms the desire to go into this career as a positive decision in life. With the focus on the Affordable Health Care Act and preventative health tactics, the general practitioner is likely to see an increase in the number of patients that he or she is responsible for as well as a correlating increase in salary. Training towards this focus suggests that “GP training would allow us to bring in targeted training. The object of training should be primary health. Every aspect of training should be directed and focused towards this goal” (Hashmi 36). In fact, due to the aging population and the press towards a universal health care coverage, the job market for physicians “is projected to grow 18 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Notably, the state of Arizona is on track to maintain this outlook as the national trend in health coverage is impacting each area. This is more relevant in rural areas as the job market increases for “physicians who are willing to practice in rural and low-income areas, because these areas tend to have difficulty attracting physicians” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Even more so, physicians who work in general practice are more likely to be involved in long term care. Changes in health care has increased the available funds for this type of care and “with Medicare funds flowing back into long-term care and the $1500 tap still under moratorium, some of the nation’s largest rehabilitation companies have launched recruitment drives” (Moore 12). The increase in the job market gives a great outlook for a career that is both financially and personally rewarding. The benefits to the physician, as well as the community interests, can be attributed to the dedication and education of the general practitioner. The economy does not directly influence this career as there is always a need for physicians and the emphasis on primary care that has been brought about by the present administration in Washington D.C. has greatly increased the awareness of this need. This makes becoming a general practitioner a reasonable career choice.

The long and difficult path to becoming a general practitioner should not be entered into lightly. The continuation of education must remain a part of the physicians routine in order to stay current on medical trends, advancements in technology, and the health of the general population. The general physician must be educated in numerous specialties in order to direct their patients to a specialized physician when symptoms are beyond the scope of the general practitioners practice. This would not be possible if the general practitioner was not familiar with the various specializations. In short, from childhood illnesses to cardiovascular issues in the geriatric stages of life, and everything in between, the general practitioner must know both how to recognize the symptoms and who, if not them, is best equipped to treat the patient. The general practitioner is responsible for making these referrals and for maintaining records of all of the health care treatments and issues for each of their patients. The general practitioner is the central avenue for all health related issues within a given community. This is a large responsibility as the community depends on the general practitioner to ensure that they remain healthy and receive proper care. There is an element of trust, compassion, and professionalism that the general practitioner must adhere to in order to continue their practice and maintain their patient pool. Without this, the patients would likely find another primary care physician. Personally, I feel that I have these qualities and would enjoy becoming a family doctor. Although I recognize the long hours and hard work through both the educational portion of becoming a doctor and the scheduling once I have started my career, I believe that I have the dedication and resources to balance this into my life. I enjoy being part of a community and helping others. I enjoy close and long term relationships with people in my community. I also believe that trust, compassion, and professionalism should be a part of every career and I take these traits to be very serious. Therefore, I believe that, even though the course will not be easy, I will become a successful general practitioner and reap the both the intrinsic and extrinsic benefits of this career choice.
